Are You Registered? The October 19 Deadline Has No Mercy
South Dakota closes voter registration Monday, October 19. Movers, name changes, and first-time voters get caught by this every cycle. Five minutes fixes it.
Neighbor,
Every election cycle, thousands of South Dakotans show up to vote and discover they cannot. Not because of fraud, or politics, or anything dramatic. Because of a deadline that passed quietly while life was busy. This is your five-minute insurance policy against being one of them.
The deadline
Voter registration for the November 3 election closes Monday, October 19, at the end of business, which is three days from today, and South Dakota law makes no exceptions about it whatsoever: no same-day registration, no grace period, and no credit for having meant to get around to it.
Who gets caught
Three groups, every single cycle. Movers: if you changed address since you last voted, even across town, your registration needs updating to your current address. Name changes: marriage, divorce, any legal name change needs a fresh registration. First-timers: new residents and every young person who turned 18 since the last election. If any of those is you or someone at your dinner table, keep reading.
How to check, right now
Go to sdsos.gov and use the Voter Information Portal. Thirty seconds tells you whether you are registered and where. If everything matches your current life, you are done. Forward this to someone who moved and go about your day.
How to register or update
Pick up a registration form at sdsos.gov, the Pennington County Auditor's office, the DMV, or most public libraries. Current address, signature, done. Get it to the county auditor by end of business Monday. There is no fee and no test, and the form takes less time than a coffee order.
Why I am pushing this so hard
Because everything else is downstream of it. Every position I have published since July, every ballot question, every local race: none of it includes you unless this one piece of paperwork is current. You get two votes for State House in District 32. Do not leave them on the table over a form.
Check yourself. Then check on a mover. sdsos.gov.
